Commentary On Revelation – Chapter 9

“And the fifth angel sounded and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.” Rev 9:1, 2.

In the past I, along with most commentators, have believed the “Star” who fell from heaven in Rev 9:1 was Satan. However, I have changed my mind on this point after considerable prayer and study. Strong’s 4098 and 4072 shows the Greek word “Pipto” and “peto” also means to “fly” or “alighting.” Jesus, of course, is the original and only true “morning star” Rev 22:16 and He truly is the only One who has power over death as He tells us in Rev 1:18. “I am He that lives, and was dead; and, behold I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death..” Therefore, it is only logical that He would also be in charge of the “bottomless pit” which is earth’s endless grave yard since the death of Abel to our day. Under the third trumpet, Rev 8:10, a “huge star fell (descended or flew down) from heaven like a “burning torch” and landed on “a third of the rivers and on the springs of water– So, what is this? The description of the locusts in Rev 9 is obviously a word picture of human beings because 1. Their faces are human faces and 2. They all wear golden crowns like the 24 elders.

This star that falls upon the people of earth (inhabited earth) is called “Wormwood,” for the simple reason that His fiery presence and message torments the 2/3rds of the people who reject Him. So, the prophet is telling us what the people have named him, a most bitter experience which they blame upon God. Rev 11:10 also refers to the torment and terror the Two Witnesses cause the wicked people of the earth who refuse to repent of their evil deeds for the 3 ½ years (1260 days) during which the Two Witnesses (same as Elect) are giving their testimony. The one third of the earth who are “killed” are the converts of our Lord, who slays them with His love during this same period of 1260 days, which will be the second or last segment of this final seven year period in this age. Joel 2 describes this same army which is formed as the seven angels are given their trumpets and begin to sound. “Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on My holy Mount [Zion]. Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the [the judgment of] the Lord is coming; it is close at hand–[Ezek. 7:2-4; Amos 5:16-20.] This reminded me of what Mark tells us happened at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry after John the Baptist was imprisoned: “Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the good news (the Gospel) of the kingdom of God. And saying, The [appointed period of] time is fulfilled (completed), and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent (have a change of mind which issues in regret for past sins and in change of conduct for the better) and believe (trust in, rely on, and adhere to) the good news (the Gospel). Mark 1:14, 15. And so we can see now that the prophecy of Joel has a dual application. The first fulfillment of it was in Christ’s day for 3 ½ years and the second one is about to begin in our day. The prophet calls this predicted time “The day of the Lord,” or “His judgment.” The timing of this is very important and Providential (supernatural) because it coincides perfectly with the first phase of the Harvest, which is the Barley. “And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to ever nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory (assign to Him His true character) to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” Rev 14:6, 7.

This will be the beginning of the Two Witnesses giving their testimony throughout the earth for the purpose of vindicating the character of God because He is the One who is actually on trial for creating us in the first place. I use the word “trial” in place of the word “judgment” because the God family are the Ones who are on trial because of us and the crimes that Satan has accused us of doing throughout history, crimes, by the way that he instigated and led men to commit.

In the book of Job we see the Lord defending His servant Job before the heavenly tribunal or council against the false accusations of our mutual enemy, Satan, the fallen angel Lucifer. Just as Job was vindicated when he refused to blame God for all of his financial losses, as well as the death (murder) of his children by Satan, so God’s people, His chosen and Elected servants in this end time, will once again vindicate the Lord’s righteous actions and character. Rev 12:7-12 reveals this end-time battle between Michael and his angels and Satan (the dragon) and his angels. Vs 7 tells of Michael’s victory when Satan and his angels are cast out and the shout of victory which followed. “And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” Rev 12:9, 10.

So, this first phase of the Second Coming of Christ takes place during and under the 6th seal, in that segment of time. Rev 9:20 refers to the events of Rev 9 as “plagues” which will be designed to bring men to repentance “yet” they “repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.” Rev 9:20, 21. We know that Rev 15 & 16 describes the “Seven Last Plagues” therefore the plagues under the 6th trumpet of Rev 9:20 must be the first plagues, being the first time “plagues” are mentioned.

Now, consider the true meaning and symbolism of fire in Revelation. Because we in the western English speaking world take most everything literally, the Hebrew symbolisms of the Bible, especially the book of Revelation is very foreign and difficult for us. For example, when we see the word “fire” we immediately think of literal fire. But the Hebrew mind did not operate that way, especially when they were talking about the true God of heaven. Paul Himself said, “Our God is a consuming fire.” Heb 12:29. Well, he should know because when Jesus appeared to Saul on the Damascus road Saul of Tarsus was burned up and destroyed by the fiery presence of Christ Himself. “At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me.” Acts 26:13; Acts 9. Jesus also stated that at the end of the world the saved would be rewarded with this same intensity of brightness. “Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun n the kingdom of their Father.” Matt 13:43.

We all know how bright the sun can be at noon. You cannot look at it directly or it will blind your eyes. And Paul states that it was even brighter than the sun. So no wonder Saul could not see for three days. But was this a literal fire? No, it was not. It was simply the Presence of Christ. This is the “Fire of God.” Moses experienced God’s presence at the burning bush on Mt Sinai when the Lord first called him, although it was not as bright as the sun. And the disciples experienced it on the day of Pentecost when the Tongues of Fire came down and lit upon their heads. With that in mind let us think of this “furnace” in Rev 9:1-3 as emanating from God’s throne and the fire being the same kind of fire which appeared to Saul of Tarsus and “consumed” him. And because we know that God does not hurt or destroy let us realize that the kind of suffering and torment these men and women are going through is spiritual. And what is being “consumed” is their carnal nature. In Luke 12:49 Jesus said that he had “come to bring fire on the earth.” In Matt 3:11 John, who was called a “burning and shining light” told the Jews that when the Messiah came He would baptize them with “the Holy Ghost, and fire:”

So, in Rev 9 we see that multitudes of the earth, billions of people will be “in the valley of decision,” Joel 3:14. And they are going to suffer terribly because, like Beltshazzer in Dan 5, their day of judgment has come and their conscience is being pricked. And because they refuse to repent their conscience is being tortured and tormented for five months like the sting of scorpions which is extremely painful. I want to show you that these “locusts” are actually human beings who are raised up in the special resurrection at the time the Elect are translated. This would be the wave sheaf of the Barley Group who go up to the throne of God and receive their gifts along with the elect and then come back down as a mighty army of 200,000,000 as Rev 9:16 tells us. Notice that they had the “shapes of the locusts (and) were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns of like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.”

So, what is being described in symbolical language are redeemed humans who are presenting the truth to the unsaved of the earth and this revelation of truth is causing extreme torture to these unsaved and unrepentant sinners of this world. For a parallel corroborating voice on this army and the soldiers read Joel 2 where a “great people and strong” are described. “The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run…before their face the people shall be much pain; all faces shall gather blackness.” Joel 2:1-6.

Another important point to consider is that this suffering is just the beginning of sorrows for the last generation of unrepentant sinners. Jesus also referred to the “beginning of sorrows.” Matt 24:7, 8. In the previous chapter we just covered, Rev 8, vs 13 an angel or messenger flying through the midst of heaven said with a “loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabitors of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound. This is referring to the three messages given by three special angels beginning in Rev 14:6. In Rev 9:20 John calls these calamities “plagues.” In light of what we have read in Rev 9 then I believe these plagues are the first plagues which are going to fall on the wicked 2/3rds who refuse to repent. The Seven Last Plagues are named and numbered in Rev 16 with the same result, that the wicked do not repent but actually blasphemed the Lord by blaming Him for bringing the plagues. By doing this they failed to give glory to Him. Vs 9. In Rev 16:8-11 we read that under the fourth of the seven last plagues men are scorched or burned with “great heat.” I believe this is literal heat that is burning the people up just as the sores are literal sores. Then the 5th plague comes right on top of this heat which is a plague of darkness on the “seat of the beast” causing a darkness which would primarily be a plague of spiritual darkness. However, as in Egypt during the Ten Plagues recorded in Exodus there was also a literal darkness, “even darkness which may be felt…a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.” Ex 10:21-23.
