Commentary On Revelation – Chapter 6

Let us remember what the “first voice” told John in Rev 4:1. “After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice which I had heard addressing me like [the calling of] a war trumpet said, Come up here, and I will show you what must take place in the future. At once I came under the [Holy] Spirits’s power, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with One seated on the throne! [Ezek. 1:26.] Dan 5:11 and Dan 7:9, 10 reveal this same throne room scene only there were no elders sitting on the thrones nor did it give the number 24 as in Rev 4:4. In Daniel “the books were opened,” but it does not say what they were. In Rev 5:1 John saw a scroll (book) in the hand of Him who sat on the throne which was written within and on the back, closed and sealed with seven seals.” Amplified. As we shall see only Jesus can open the seals.

“Then I saw as the Lamb broke open one of the seven seals, and as if in a voice of thunder I heard one of the four living creatures call out, Come!” Rev 6:1 Amplified.

“And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse that was red:” Rev 6:1-4b. KJV.

The breaking of the third seal reveals a black horse whose rider has a pair of scales or balance. The scales represent weighing for the purpose of checking and testing which probably represents a time of judgment. The color of the fourth horse is pale whose rider is named Death and Hades.

“And they were given authority and power over a fourth part of the earth to kill with the sword and with famine and with plague (pestilence, disease) and with wild beasts of the earth. [Ezek. 5:12; Hos. 13:14.] Rev 6:8 Amplified.

The reason these four horseman of Rev 6:1-8 have been so famous throughout the Christian age is due mainly to John’s vivid word portrayal of the four colors of the horses and their very strange and fearful riders. For over 2,000 years these strange and sinister horsemen have caught the imagination of the whole human race. Even people who don’t know much about the bible have heard of the four horseman even though most don’t realize they come from the sixth chapter of the Apocalypse (book of Revelation). The first attempt at interpreting John’s visions was made as early as 303 AD by one Victorinus. He pointed out the repetitive nature of the number seven along with their accompanying symbols such as the seven Spirits of God, the seven golden candlesticks and the seven stars in the first three chapters along with the seven seals, the seven trumpets and the seven thunders. A few others have also attempted to decipher the mysterious symbols of both Daniel and Revelation. And each generation has been able to discern some applications and significance to their trials and afflictions which our all wise heavenly has Father permitted and used to perfect their characters. As time has passed century by century and decade by decade those who are “wise” (Dan 12) have been able to discern more applications as the prophetic scroll continues to unroll before our eyes.

Because seven is the number of perfection we need to realize before we begin to try and interpret these prophetic visions that there is a most holy and divine perfection in them which we must approach and handle with much prayerful reverence and respect if we ever hope to understand the awesome messages of warning they hold for us who are living in these very last days of earth’s history. In addition to these multiple sevens is another repetitive multiple of seven couched in three numeric patterns, namely: 1260 days, 42 months and Time, times and a half of time. These added together also comprise another seven in terms of a final period of time. For example in Rev 11 you have in vs 2 the 42 months and in vs 3 the 1260 days. They are not measuring or covering the same 3 ½ years but are two 3 ½ year periods making a total of seven. But in Rev 12:6, 14 you have the 1260 days and then the time, times and half of a time which are obviously referring to a 3 ½ year period during which the church is hiding out in the wilderness from the face of the serpent. The book “Great Controversy” defines “wilderness” not as a hiding place in the mountains or desert, per se, but as “obscurity and seclusion.” Think of how the Jews hid from Hitler during his reign of terror for at least four years. Were they hiding in the mountains or deserts? No, they were secreted away from the SS in the attics and cellars of cities such as Berlin and Munich and in the homes of the Dutch such as Corrie Ten Boom and her family provided in Holland. And who are these believers who are hiding out for 3 ½ years? They are those who refused to listen and believe the message of God’s true character during the first three and a half years of the Little Time of Trouble. As a result they missed out on the translation of the Barley and Wheat Harvests and now have to be perfected during these 42 months of unholy terror throughout the earth. What I am telling you now you should take as a very serious warning. Jeremiah predicted the woeful cry of those who will find themselves unprepared after the death decree which will signal the end of the Little Time of Trouble and the beginning of the Big Time of Trouble. Before Nebuchadnezzar came against Jerusalem in three sieges, 606 BC, 598 BC and 586 BC Jeremiah had counseled the people to stop worshiping the Queen of heaven and to put away their carved images and foreign idols. But they would not listen and it broke the aged prophet’s heart. “Oh, that I [Jeremiah] could comfort myself against sorrow, [for my grief is beyond healing], my heart is sick and faint within me!…The harvest is past, the summer has ended and the gathering of fruit is over, yet we are not saved!” Amplified. “In Palestine the grain harvest begins about April. The fruit harvest comes about August or September. When the grain crops failed, there was still the hope there would be a yield of grapes, figs, olives, etc. For Judah, however, the fruit-gathering season – the last opportunity–had passed, and there was no deliverance. Her doom was now inevitable. Soon for the world the last summer will come and the last harvest reaped. Then from the lips of thousands now living complacently will again ascend this wail of despair (see 7T 16).” BC 4 page 394. Comment on Jer 8:20. Remember that the grain harvest begins with the Barley which is a very short harvest which comes just before the Wheat Harvest. Most people do not realize that the Barley is not considered a very important grain. And so it is with the Elect, who are symbolized by the Barley. They are looked down upon as odd ball rejects and wierdos just as the Jews looked at Jeremiah and Ezekiel.

Time of the Barley Harvest…how long it takes.

The feast of Passover and Unleavened Bread, commemorating the Exodus from Egypt and the forty years of wandering, comes during the month of Nisan or Abib (late March/early April). At the conclusion of this eight -day festival, the first sheaf of grain (barley) was brought as a wave offering before the Lord, signaling the beginning of the grain harvest season or the summer. From this, fifty days are counted until the end of the harvest, when is celebrated the feast of Weeks, Hebrew Shavucot or New Testament “Pentecost,” meaning “count of fifty” (Leviticus 23:14 -17

Notice the timing of the Barley harvest perfectly fits with the timing of Jesus’ last week He was on earth. Jesus was an example of what the “Barley” and/or the “Elect” will be in our day. He is the model man, our example, who has gone before us and we are to take up our own cross and follow in His steps. Matt 16:24; Mark 10:21. Christ also represented the slain Passover lamb. “Christ is our Passover,” Paul tells us. I Cor 5:7. Jesus, as the way shower, was also perfected by the things that He suffered: “Though He was a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered; And being made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him.” Heb 5:8, 9. So, there is another Barley harvest coming at the end of the first 3 ½ years, which is the same period of time Jesus preached the gospel. The Elect or Barley group will give their testimony for three and one half years like Jesus did. “And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.” Rev 11:3.

Now, as soon as their testimony is completed the NWO will pass a death decree designed for the one purpose of getting rid of them because their testimony “tormented” their conscience for 3 ½ years, Rev 11:10. Then in vs 11 & 12 they are translated in front of their enemies. This is the same group symbolized by the Man Child of Rev 12:5. They are taken up to the Father’s throne where they receive their gifts and commission, the same as Jesus did on the resurrection morning. Dan 7:13, 14. Then, like Christ, they will return, Malachi 3:16-18, and search out and find, by the divine gift of discernment of character, those who have been spiritually matured to become members of the 144,000, which will be the Wheat Harvest.

This wheat harvest will take 40 (days the same period of time Jesus remained on earth) selecting 108 more disciples to add to the 11, plus Matthias, who took Judas’ place, thus making 120 at the end of that 40 day period. And then just as those 120 waited for ten more days to complete the 50 days taking them to the day of Jubilee the 144,000 will also wait with the Elect or Little Company (Barley Group) to be filled with the Latter rain after they, like the 120, become of one accord.” Acts 2:1.

When I was in a suburb of Chicago two years ago the Lord led me to a book in a friend’s home entitled, “A New Book on Daniel and Revelation,” by Russell Crutcher. It was published in 1957, 1962, 1973, 1980. Although he does not teach the character of God message in this 322 page volume he does have two drawings of two female angels in the very front of the book who are giving Daniel and John their visions. There is only one angel who gave Daniel His vision and that was Gabriel whose name is actually the feminine Gabrielle. Even though the author was led by the Spirit to put those drawings of Gabrielle as a female angel in the very front of his book he does seem to realize that he is thereby identifying Gabrielle as the female companion of Michael. In reality they are the only Son and only Daughter of the Most high, twins, brother and sister and husband and wife, Creators of planet earth, Father and Mother of us all. And thus it is that he does identify Gabrielle as a female angel equal to Christ without realizing it. His book has many excellent insights from both the Scripture and the writings of the SOP.

On page 110 he deals with Rev 4, 5, 6 and 8 explaining the necessity of dual or double fulfillment of prophecy. He cites the prophetic words of Jesus in Matt 24:29-34 re: the sun being darkened and the moon not giving her light and the falling of the stars, as well as the powers of heaven being shaken. “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” Then going on in vs 32-34, Jesus uses the fig tree as a symbol or sign of knowing how soon His coming will be. He even gives the time of year (season) when He will return. Just as the fig tree’s leaves forecast that “Summer is near…So also when you see these signs, all taken together, coming to pass, you may know of a surety that He is near, at the very doors. Truly I tell you, this generation (the whole multitude of people living at the same time, in a definite, given period) will not pass away till all these things taken together take place.” Amplified.

The night of November 12-13, 1833, not only marks the discovery of the Leonid meteor shower, but sparked the actual birth of meteor astronomy. During the hours following sunset on November 12, some astronomers noted an unusual number of meteors in the sky, but it was the early morning hours of the 13th that left the greatest impression on the people of eastern North America. During the 4 hours which preceded dawn, the skies were lit up by meteors.

Reactions to the 1833 display are varied from the hysterics of the superstitious claiming Judgement Day was at hand, to the just plain excitement of the scientific, who estimated that a thousand meteors a minute emanated from the region of Leo. Newspapers of the time reveal that almost no one was left unaware of the spectacle, for if they were not awakened by the cries of excited neighbors, they were usually awakened by flashes of light cast into normally dark bedrooms by the fireballs.

At the time of the 1833 display, the true nature of meteors were not known for certain, but theories were abundant in the days and weeks which followed. The Charleston Courier published a story on how the sun caused gases to be released from plants recently killed by frost. These gases, the most abundant of which was believed to be hydrogen, “became ignited by electricity or phosphoric particles in the air.” The United States Telegraph of Washington, DC, stated, “The
strong southern wind of yesterday may have brought a body of electrified air, which, by the coldness of the morning, was caused to discharge its contents towards the earth.” Despite these early, creative attempts to explain what had happened, it was Denison Olmsted who ended up explaining the event most accurately. 1833 – The radiant established In 1833, observers are somewhat familiar with Leonid storms. The storm that year is very intense and the event leads to the first formulation of a theory on the origin of meteors.

“On the night of November 12-13, 1833, a tempest of falling stars broke over the Earth… The sky was scored in every direction with shining tracks and illuminated with majestic fireballs. At Boston, the frequency of meteors was estimated to be about half that of flakes of snow in an average snowstorm. Their numbers… were quite beyond counting; but as it waned, a reckoning was attempted, from which it was computed, on the basis of that much-diminished rate, that 240,000 must have been visible during the nine hours they continued to fall.” – Agnes Clerke’s, Victorian Astronomy Writer

First-hand account of 1833 Meteor Shower by Elder Samuel Rogers

I at once sold my little farm in the neighborhood of Antioch, and, having disposed of what stock and stuff I could not take with me, on the 13th of November, 1833, I was ready to start upon the journey for our new home in the West. On the evening of the twelfth, many of our dear friends came into bid us adieu, and they remained until a very late hour, when, after a prayer, the most of them returned to their homes, a few remaining to see us off in the morning.

We had but little rest that night, for, before three o”clock in the morning, we were all aroused from our slumbers, making preparation for an early start. Some one, on looking out of the window, observed that it was almost broad daylight. “That can not be,” another answered, “For it is scarcely three o”clock.” “I can”t help what the clock says,” replied the first speaker, “my eyes can not deceive me; it is almost broad daylight –look for yourselves.”

After this little altercation, some one went to the door for the purpose of settling the question. Fortunately, there was not a cloud in the heavens; so by a glance, all was settled. I heard one of the children cry out, in a voice expressive of alarm: “Come to the door, father, the world is surely coming to an end.” Another exclaimed: “See! The whole heavens are on fire! All the stars are falling!” These cries brought us all into the open yard, to gaze upon the grandest and most beautiful scene my eyes have ever beheld. It did appear as if every star had left its moorings, and was drifting rapidly in a westerly direction, leaving behind a track of light which remained visible for several seconds.

Some of those wandering stars seemed as large as the full moon, or nearly so, and in some cases they appeared to dash at a rapid rate across the general course of the main body of meteors, leaving in their track a bluish light, which gathered into a thin cloud not unlike a puff of smoke from a tobacco-pipe. Some of the meteors were so bright that they were visible for some time after day had fairly dawned. Imagine large snowflakes drifting over your head, so near you that you can distinguish them, one from the other, and yet so thick in the air as to almost obscure the sky; then imagine each snowflake to be a meteor, leaving behind it a tail like a little comet; these meteors of all sizes, from that of a drop of water to that of a great star, having the size of the full moon in appearance: and you may then have some faint idea of this wonderful scene.

I have shared the historical documents above to confirm that the falling of the stars in 1833 was exactly what the SDA pioneers at that time claimed they were in spite of modern day scoffers and skeptics. So, we can clearly see that the annals of history do contain the record of the falling of the stars during the time William Miller was beginning to preach about the Second Coming of Christ and the end of the world in his day, during the 1830’s up until 1844. He did not set a date but calculated that it would be sometime between March 22, 1843 and March 22, 1844. Prior to that there was the dark day of May 19, 1780, and the night following when the moon had the appearance of blood. I will not do a search on Google to document that although I am sure it could be done the same as the falling of the stars, as I have shown above. But the main point I want to make is that there is a parallel between what happened during that time period in the hearts of those who professed to be looking for the coming of the Lord. After the great disappointment of Oct 22, 1844, most of those who had made such a high profession of their love for Jesus Christ gave up their faith and fell by the wayside due to the scoffing and criticism they had to endure after the prophecy failed. Here is what the servant of the Lord wrote about that in 1888. “If all who had labored unitedly in the work in 1844, had received the third angel’s message and proclaimed it in the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord would have wrought mightily with their efforts. A flood of light would have been shed upon the world. Years ago the inhabitants of the earth would have been warned, the closing work completed, and Christ would have come for the redemption of His people.” Great Controversy, pg 458. The same writer also wrote that it was not God’s will for Israel to wander in the wilderness for 40 years. He wanted to lead them directly to the promised land of Canaan. But because of unbelief (re: the Ten Spies who doubted and discouraged the people) they were not able to go into the land of Canaan and be established as a holy and happy people.

“In like manner, it was not the will of God that the coming of Christ should be so long delayed, and His people should remain so many years in this world of sin and sorrow. But unbelief separated them from God. As they refused to do the work which God had appointed them, others were raised up to proclaim the message. In mercy to the world, Jesus delays His coming, that sinners may have an opportunity to hear the warning, and find in Him a shelter before the wrath of God shall be poured out.” GC 458. I believe this was written after the rejection of the messages of Jones & Wagner. So, we may expect the signs foretold by Christ to be repeated in our day as a final fulfillment.

The same writer, EGW, stated in Christ’s Object Lessons 294 re: the book John saw in God’s hand: “Thus the Jewish leaders made their choice. Their decision was registered in the book which John saw in the hand of Him that sat upon the throne, the book which no man could open. In all its vindictiveness this decision will appear before them in the day when the book is unsealed by the Lion of the tribe of Judah.” COL 294. Rev 5 is yet to be fulfilled. “The fifth chapter of Revelation needs to be closely studied. It is of great importance to those who shall act a part in the work of God for these last days. There are some who are deceived…” 9T 267. “Testimonies to Ministers” pg 116 also states that we should “Study Revelation in connection with Daniel, for history will be repeated.” This further confirms that the final and complete fulfillment of the books of Daniel and Revelation is still future. Many are not studying these two books because they have been deceived into thinking that the prophecies of Daniel & Revelation are in the past having already been fulfilled. While it is true that there have been partial fulfillment the complete fulfillment will take place during the last seven years which I believe is going to begin soon.

Those who believe in a strict historical interpretation of Rev 6:2 see this as having been fulfilled by the early Christians after the day of Pentecost during the 3 ½ years that followed and then by the missionary work of Paul and other disciples of the first century. But how could that be when John did not write the book of Revelation until AD 96? Let us for a moment re-consider Rev 6 in the light of what is happening right now in our day and the prophecy of vs 2. “And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.”

Traditionally this prophetic verse has been applied to the early church (Acts 2-9) going forth to the whole world under the power and guidance of the Holy Ghost. But this does not fit because the book of Revelation was not written until 96 AD. Let us for a moment review step by step what we do know for sure about John’s prophetic visions. 1. The Father gives His only Son the information in the book of Revelation. Jesus sends this revelation through “His angel” in 96 AD to John on the Isle of Patmos. The first three chapters are messages to seven churches in Asia Minor which most scholars have admitted represent seven stages through which the church must pass before Christ can return. All things must be restored first, Acts 3:21. Some interpret these messages to be periods of time since A.D. 96 while others see them as still future. The traditional interpretation is that the seven churches represent seven periods of church history. If this is true I believe it is only an initial or partial application or fulfillment. The final fulfillment is still future.

The perfected church of Philadelphia, Rev 3:6-12, represents the mature church which is ready for the harvest. These are the chosen saints, the Elected Barley group who respond to Jesus’ invitation to open the door and go into the wedding supper of the lamb which means they will be translated and pass through the open door of Rev 4:1 into the very throne room of the Ancient of days Daniel saw in Dan 7:13, 14. 2. The 24 elders sing a “New Song” in Rev 5:9 saying “Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals…for you were slain and has redeemed us to God…” KJV. Notice that the KJV translates vs 9 & 10 as saying “Thou hast redeemed us” and “thou has made us…kings and priests.” But all other versions translate it “You purchased men unto God” and “And you have made them a kingdom (royal race) and priests to our God, and they shall reign (as kings) over the earth! Ex 19:6; Isa 61:6). The KJV translation makes it seem like the 24 Elders are talking about themselves but the other translations make it sound like the 24 Elders are talking about another group of people. This is extremely important that we recognize this difference. So, what does this mean? I believe that it means that the Barley are the first group to be translated and then after they receive their gifts and commission from the Father’s throne, Dan 7:13, 14, this small “Elect” or “Barley” harvest group return to earth to conduct the Wheat Harvest. You will read about this in other articles I have included in this commentary in more than one chapter. 3. We need to realize that the book of Revelation is written in chronological sequence in reference to time, per se, but the information in each chapter will often over lap and compliment what has already been written in order to give more details covering both the religious and political events that will occur during the last seven years of this age.

Notice that the first rider has a crown and a bow. The crown represents royalty which shows that what John saw and wrote about them becoming kings in Rev 5:9, 10 is now coming to pass in Rev 6:2. The dominion of this earth has now passed to the Elect who are now the new rulers (Kings) of this earth. “And a crown was given him, and he rode forth conquering and to conquer. Ps 45:4, 5: Zech. 1:8; 6:1-3). Look at Ps 45:4, 5 as it really fits in here.

“And in your majesty ride on triumphantly for the cause of truth, humility, and righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God) ; and let Your right hand guide You to tremendous things. Your arrows are sharp; the peoples fall under You; Your darts pierce the hearts of the King’s enemies.” Psalm 45:4, 5. Amplified. This prophetic Psalm pictures God’s Elect and Chosen saints, His high command army of John describes in Rev 19 as going forth to conquer and subdue the earth under the rightful rule of its true Creators, Michael and Gabrielle. The prophet Micah foresaw this day: “We will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever. In that day, says the Lord will I assemble her that halts and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted; And I will make her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the Lord shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever. And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto you shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.” Micah 4:5-8. This will be the army the prophet Joel saw in vision, the same vision John was given in Rev 8:2-6 as they were preparing to sound the alarm that the final battle of this earth is about to begin, even the Battle of Armageddon. “And I saw the seven angels (messengers) which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.” Rev 8:2. KJV. Here is what Joel wrote: “Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on My holy Mount [Zion]. Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the [the judgment of] the Lord is coming; it is close at hand–Ezek 7:2-4; Amos 5:16-20]. A day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and of thick mists and darkness, like the morning dawn spread upon the mountains; so there comes a [heathen, hostile] people numerous and mighty, the like of which has never been before and shall not be again even to the years of many generations. A fire devours before them, and behind them a flame burns; the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yes, and none has escaped [the ravages of the devouring hordes]. Joel 2. Amplified.
